I watched Mr. Brooks and boy was I surprised. I thought this would be very run of the mill, but I was left pretty freaked out. Kevin Costner is really good, and Dane Cook has a decent showing. The star of the show is William Hurt, who plays an alter ego for Mr. Brooks. He appears to Mr. Brooks and speaks to him as they discuss how and why they will kill. This is a bit of a thinker.

The Mist
A new movie called The Mist comes out on November 21st, starring Thomas Jane. Its based off of a short story by Stephen King. When I first saw a preview a while back, I read the story and it was great. Its about a mist that rolls in after a storm and brings creatures with it. Most of the story revolves around people holed up in a grocery store.

And on this rock I will build my church
We had an interesting service this morning at church. Evergreen Christian Community is celebrating 100 years, and we learned about ECC's history. The part I found most interesting was a discussion of an exchange between Jesus and Peter from Matthew 16:15-18
15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
I went to a Catholic high school, so I learned all about church history. The early church used the phrase "you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church" to make Peter the early leader of the church and eventually became the first Pope. This authority is what give the Catholic Church its authority on Earth.
But what if Jesus wasn't talking specifically to Peter? In verse 16, Peter tells Jesus that they believe the he is the son of God. Pastor Dale said that when Jesus replies back to Peter, the rock he is referring to is the admission Peter made, not Peter himself.
I hadn't thought to much about this, so I was thinking about this for the rest of the service. I can't see how Jesus would ever give that kind of authority to one man. I did some googleing and found this article:

The Best Question Ever
I am about 2/3 of the way through the book, The Best Question Ever. It is really good. The books premise is that you can avoid trouble, think clearly, and make sound decisions by asking the simple question: What is the wise thing to do?
The idea I got so far was not to ask if something is wrong when I come to a decision to make, but instead to think of "is this wise?". By making a small series of wise decisions, you can avoid pitfalls that are the conclusion of a long series of this isn't wrong decisions.
The other thing I liked so far, is that this can be applied to almost any part of your life. Whether it be planning your work or what to spend money on, the question lets you think it through.
What does all of this mean to me? Well, I am making a few small changes to my life. I think I live by some of the principles taught already, but there are a few areas of my life that can make some changes.

Spiritual walk
Over the last year or so, I have made it a personal goal to renew my faith. In 2000, I went through some trying times (that now seem silly) that helped push me away from God. When I went away to college, I was then in a new place and made excuses to not find a church.
When I got married in 2006, my wife and I started a process of finding a church we could attend. We eventually for Coast Vineyard in San Diego, and we loved it. Unfortunately, we moved to Washington so we had to leave. We have found a new church here, and I am beginning to find it a good place for me.
I have been reading books about faith and Christianity and I will begin talking about some of them. I have also found that my relationship with Jesus comes in many forms and not just in a service on Sundays.

World Cup Rotation
Around 2001, there was a big controversy with FIFA when Germany was awarded the 2006 world cup instead of South Africa. FIFA President Sepp Blatter wanted the World Cup to be in South Africa, and vowed to create a rotation policy to ensure each continent would be awarded a World Cup in turn.
Now, the rotation policy has ended. What a waste this whole thing was. Why didn't FIFA come up with a common sense rule/policy to rotate the World Cup that didn't guarantee a specific continent a World Cup. Maybe the last 5 countries, or 2 continents to host are ineligible. This would ensure that the World Cup would be moved around, which was the aim of the rotation policy.
There was way too much made about this in 2001, and I'm glad some common sense has prevailed.

Income Tax
My wife was watching TV the other night, and the NBC nightly news came on. Brian Williams covered the stories for the night and one caught my attention. Warren Buffet complained his tax rate was too low because his secretary paid a higher tax rate while making for less money. The question posed by Brian Williams was "Why is his tax rate so low?"
This got to me. This was exactly the wrong question. He should have said "why was the secretary's so high?" If I remember, the Warren Buffets makes his money from investments which has a lower tax rate than does standard income from work.
Here we go. I hate our income tax system. Why?, you may ask. If you can tell me what your tax rate is in less than 30 seconds without looking at your tax return, then I will retract that statement.
The government decided a while ago they could tax our income at a very low rate and only only the wealthy. They have slowly but surely crept this down to everyone. The other thing is that they create tax breaks and all sorts of complications for political gain.
We do need to pay taxes to be able to have roads, schools, utilities, and other services, but we are taxed every which way already. Think about it. You are taxed when you get a paycheck. Then you are taxed when you use that already taxed money when you go to the store to buy something. You are even taxed when you die. Awesome!
Some (read: Democrats) always like to say increase the tax for the rich and the corporations, but they just turn around and raise prices so we just end up paying that anyway.
So now what do we do? First of all Income tax needs to go. I like the Fair Tax because you voluntarily pay taxes when you buy good and services. The other key there is that there is 1 tax rate, and if this was ever increased, we would know about it.

Manchester United
Manchester United bought Carlos Tevez this season, and many wondered if Tevez would fit in to the team and play well with Wayne Rooney. I think that question has been answered as they have won 6 games in a row. The 2 players linked up on 3 of Utd's 4 goals this weekend and looked very good doing it.

You need to happen to stuff.
People that are wiser than me say that you need to happen to stuff, or stuff will happen to you. I have found this is especially true with money. Andrea and I have done a monthly budget for a year now, and nothing happens with our money unless it is on our budget for the month. If something happens, we have to agree to change our budget. At first this was very limiting because I wasn't able to just go buy the things I wanted.
Now, I feel more satisfied with my purchases because I have to wait to buy it, do careful research to decide that right thing, and find a deal. For example, I wanted to get a GPS unit for my car. I spent some time looking for one, and I found one from Garmin that did the things I needed. I eventually found that Amazon.com had a deal for about 40% off, so I saved about $200 on it.
This also applies to many areas of life, and I have found planning for various things far ahead makes me feel more at ease. I try to look at various time frames, such as the week, month, year to decide priorities.

Sunshine
I saw the movie Sunshine recently and I think its one of the best movies I have seen in a while. It has a really good story, and the characters are believable. There is something that happens near the end that I didn't like too much, but that is a pretty small deal.

Pizza
I have been delivering pizza for 2 weeks now. Its actually kind of fun, but more importantly it is worth it. 1 year from now we will be in a better spot that we are now, and I can relax at home after work. I have plenty of time to listen to podcast while I am driving around. Listening to debt free screams on the Dave Ramsey show keeps me motivated.

VP Daniels orders an air strike to ensure the microchip is destroyed. Jack's nephew is on the platform though.

Jack finds out about the air strike and sees a chopper. He discsuesses this with Bill.
Jack "Nadia ordered us back to CTU on Chopper 1, I'm going to take it."
Bill "I'll fly. You prep the weapons."
Jack goes to a CTU vehicle and begins taking out guns.
I love the way Jack does it.
Moments later they get in the chopper and Jack tells the pilot to get out.
The Pilot doesn't hesitate and leaves without a word. He must know Jack.
5:22 AM
Jack and Bill arrive in the chopper. Jack shoots 2 hostiles and then they land.
Chinese men start running and Jack starts shooting. Too many to count.
5:26 AM
Jack heads down the platform to find his Dad. Jack kills 2 hostiles. The camera ctus to the F-18s about to blow up the paltform, what drama!
Josh shoots Philip Bauer, but then Jack arrives and stop Josh from killing him.
Philip asks Jack to kill him, but Jack leaves him to die slowly.
5:30 AM
Bill flys the helicopter down the platform and Jack jumps off and catches the ladder on the helicopter as the missles hit. Once again Jack saves the day.
So all of this leaves a long time for wrap up.
Jack goes to see Audrey and tells Secretary Heller that he is taking her. He then sees her lying on a hospital bed and then gets all sad. Jack then leaves and the day comes to an end.
In all this was a down season of 24. I hope the can rebound next year.

The hostiles in CTU move the prisoners to a hodling room. Jack, Nadia and Morris fight back. Jack begins grappling with the head bad buy and uses hsi machine gun sto blow a way another hostile. jack eventuall gets the upperhand and chokes out the main bad guy with a strap. Just as the bad guy dies, Jack reaches up and snaps his neck just to make it clear that the hostile is dead.
Moment later Doyle and the other field agents return to mop up the other hostiles.

In pursuit of his nephew who was taken by the hostiles, Jack catches up with them just as they start to drive away. Jack is climbing up a rope and shoots at the lead car and kills the driver. The other CTU agents climb up with Jack and a firefight begins. It looks like Jack kills one. Then does a sliding manuever to sneak behind and kill another.
jack then pursues Cheng and some other hostiles.

Hostile begin taking CTU over, and Jack doesn't like it. He grabs a dead CTU guards gun and dispatches 2 hostiles.
He then sneaks under a stair well and shoots another as he walks down the stair. Jack then kills a 4th.

The bad guy leader asks who is in charge of CTU, and Milo says he is. Bad guy shoots Milo in the face. I guess he means business.

Two hostiles find Jack's sister in law and nephew - apparently they have being hanging out at CTU all night.
Jack doesn't take kindly to those types, and uses a burst of gunfire to kill them both. Of course all the bullets go in the bad guys, and his loved ones are unharmed.

President Palmer gets the Ambassador to talk and turn over a general that is aiding Fayed. He then aborts the missiles and reveals that they were fake anyway and this was a bluff - that worked.

Jack and Doyle begin roughly interrogating Fayed. They plan to take him back to CTU so Burke can use drugs to make Fayed talk.
Jack looks at Fayed and says. "Now we're goning to have some fun."
Fayed shits himself (or so it looks).

The transports carrying Fayed back to CTU is hit and Jack is under attack. Both Jack and Doyle are hit and Fayed escapes with the hostiles.
Moments later Jack and Doyle get up and CTU comes in. The escape was a setup. You are so clever Jack.

Milo turns into a huge pussy back at CTU. Complaining that his girl asks Doyle if he is ok and whining about it.

Jack suspects that Fayed knows he is being setup and tries to warn the CTU agents. All of a sudden A/V from the truck is gone as they go in a tunnel. Jack pulls up to find the CTU agents dead and Fayed gone.
Lesson: Don't ever transport prisoners through a tunnel. This is at least the 2nd time today that this has happened to CTU. When will they ever learn?

Jack follows Fayed to a garbage truck and hitches a ride underneath.

Fayed arrives at his hideout and orders one guy to stay outside. About 3 seconds later Jack judo chops him and then snaps his neck.
Jack then proceeds inside and just starts blasting. No sneaking or being stealth. Jack and his pistol tyakes out 5 guys with AK-47s.
When the underlings die. Jack and Fayed fight. Of course both have empty clips so it is hand to hand. These to bash each with wrenchs, pipes, and chains. Moments later Doyle runs in with CTU agents and the bombs are secure now. Doyle finally looks around and sees all the bodies, "Damn Jack." Thats how awesome Jack Bauer is, other operatives are amazed.

No, Doyles phone rings with a call for Jack. The call is from Audrey who is being held by the Chinese.
Ok, so this episode was nuts. Wayne Palmer finally becoming a baddass and Jack just finally getting sick of Fayed and all his BS. Then the Chinese dude is back. This is cool. This definetly made up for the whole mess with Jack's brother.
President Palmer gets the Ambassador to talk and turn over a general that is aiding Fayed. He then aborts the missiles and reveals that they were fake anyway and this was a bluff - that worked.

Jack and Doyle begin roughly interrogating Fayed. They plan to take him back to CTU so Burke can use drugs to make Fayed talk.
Jack looks at Fayed and says. "Now we're goning to have some fun."
Fayed shits himself (or so it looks).

The transports carrying Fayed back to CTU is hit and Jack is under attack. Both Jack and Doyle are hit and Fayed escapes with the hostiles.
Moments later Jack and Doyle get up and CTU comes in. The escape was a setup. You are so clever Jack.

Milo turns into a huge pussy back at CTU. Complaining that his girl asks Doyle if he is ok and whining about it.

Jack suspects that Fayed knows he is being setup and tries to warn the CTU agents. All of a sudden A/V from the truck is gone as they go in a tunnel. Jack pulls up to find the CTU agents dead and Fayed gone.
Lesson: Don't ever transport prisoners through a tunnel. This is at least the 2nd time today that this has happened to CTU. When will they ever learn?

Jack follows Fayed to a garbage truck and hitches a ride underneath.

Fayed arrives at his hideout and orders one guy to stay outside. About 3 seconds later Jack judo chops him and then snaps his neck.
Jack then proceeds inside and just starts blasting. No sneaking or being stealth. Jack and his pistol tyakes out 5 guys with AK-47s.
When the underlings die. Jack and Fayed fight. Of course both have empty clips so it is hand to hand. These to bash each with wrenchs, pipes, and chains. The whole episode was about waking President Palmer to stop a retaliatory nuclear strike. What is this week's cliffhanger? President Palmer ordering the strike.

Jack uses suspect to capture Gredenko. Jack tells the other CTU agents that there is another hostile in the car, and then shoots him. Thanks for the warning Jack.

"I'm going to finish this. And when I do, I'm going to track down the people responsible for her murder, and I'm going to take care of them too."

Jack and Doyle lead a CTU raid on the pilot of the drone. Jack kills one of the terrorists outside and then takes care of a second hostile inside. He kills the pilot before he can set off a grenade. Jack must be off his game today, he used 2 bullets on each of them not one.

Jack lands the drone before it can reach its destination thus avoid a 2nd nuclear attack. This is the 2nd nuke Jack has disarmed today. I think tomorrow he is going to drive to Mars.

I can't decide if Clark punched a hole in his because the Chargers lost to the Patriots, or if he was so pumped up about seeing Jack Bauer do his thing.
